Professional photography entails so much more than pushing a button. There is artistic craft involved that requires years of training and professional development, use of specialized gear, and hours of behind the scenes time and dedication to make high quality images for clients. Photography is about provoking strong emotions that capture a glimpse of time in your life, which is why it is called an investment.

After you have paid your deposit and signed your contract, we will work on confirming all the details for your session! I always ask if there is a location preference special to you, or a backdrop you prefer that represents your family. I want your photos to be meaningful and unique to what matters most to you. However, I am always happy to provide ideas and example galleries to give you an idea of all the beautiful scenic options we have in Oregon.

Once your session is complete, I will send a sneak peak within 5 days of the session. Full galleries require 2 weeks editing time for portrait sessions as explained in the contract. Weddings take up to 90 days depending on hours of coverage and package purchased.

What to expect

Prepare for your photo session the day before and set aside your outfits and give yourself plenty of time to get ready. This way, you can be calm, composed, and prepared for a fun and relaxing session. Make sure everyone in the family is well rested and has a full belly. Bring snacks and an extra pair of clothing for little ones just in case! Plan on doing things as a family that you naturally do when spending time together and enjoy. What can you do to show your children's personality and bring authentic character and smiles? Know that not everyone needs to be perfectly still and looking at the camera at the same time to get a wonderful photo. Some of the best images are naturally occurring moments that are unposed. Consider bringing an activity you can do together (playing a game, blowing bubbles). Let me know if you want to include pets, as they are always welcome!

Other Family Photography Tips

I work closely with clients to review event timelines and ceremony details, and explain what to expect from wedding photography. This includes working closely with other vendors to help things run smoothly and capture the naturally occurring special moments. I love discussing a client's vision for their big day to make sure your images are as unique as your event.

Wedding Tips

Before your session, we can discuss styling and wardrobe ideas and I will send you a customized styling guide. Depending on your package, a wardrobe change is an option if getting a variety of looks and styles is a goal for the session. A general wardrobe suggestion is to make sure you think about comfort. If you do not feel comfortable and confident in your attire, you will not look comfortable and at ease in your photos. You will need to be able to move, sit and walk in different positions so consider wearing casual clothing that will allow for different poses.

Styling

It is best to coordinate colors for family sessions instead of completely match. If you choose 2-4 colors, include some neutrals and balance it with one or two simple patterns. Make sure to avoid large logos or lettering, and contrasting patterns like multiple people in plaid or stripes. For sessions involving little ones, make sure to bring snacks and a few toys to make them feel at ease. I normally tell children that we are going to "have fun, hang out, and take some pictures."

Styling for Families

Similar to family photos, coordinating outfits and colors is the most flattering. For engagement sessions, you likely will want to have a few different options including one more formal, and one more casual. Choosing something you normally wear will help your natural personalities shine through and feel authentic.

Styling for couples

Longer, more flowy dresses are gorgeous for maternity sessions. Many clients like to have their hair and make-up done for maternity sessions - let me know if you need some suggestions! There are great online boutiques for maternity dresses. Coordinate with your partner choosing neutral colors and work with me on suggestions of what might work best based on session location.

Styling for maternity

Layering is a great option for senior portraits. So having a jacket, sweater option and then being able to take lawyers off for other styling options works great. It is best to bring a few outfit options with one more casual and a dressier option. Consider pops of color with accessories such as jewelry, scarves, and hats. Choosing more neutral colors is ideal since styles sometimes come and go, so having something timeless yet brings out personality is key!
